Episode #02 – Smörgåsbord of skills

You’ve just joined the Australian Public Service (APS), can now put names to faces and have since aced the probationary period. But there’s still a long way to go before you’re part of the office furniture. What skills you can bring or build on in yourgraduate role that will set you up for success in your professional career?

In this episode our Gradcast hosts Callum and Krishna talk to two highly esteemed people-in-the-know, Kate Boxsell, Deputy Head of APS Academy at the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) and Vanessa Roarty, Assistant Commissioner, Digital Profession at the APSC who between them have 50 years of experience in the APS. They talk about “what to do when you don’t know what to do” and share their most memorable experiences to date working in the APS.

Callum also talks to his colleague and fellow Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation grad Alice Wang who is currently in her 13th month of a 17th-month rotation. She takes the adage of dressing for the job you want to a whole other level!

3 things learnt:

  • How to be a great public servant
  • How to build on your digital skills to adapt to the APS of the future
  • How to transition from the grad program to a permanent position
